The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Charles Anosike, has reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and modern geospatial technologies to improve weather forecasting and early warning services across Africa.
Speaking at the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Executive Council Side Event on “Scaling AI-Powered Weather Services for Farmers” at the WMO headquarters, Prof. Anosike said NiMet is advancing the use of AI to strengthen operational meteorology and support the Early Warnings for All initiative, with the goal of providing farmers and vulnerable communities with more timely, accurate and actionable weather and climate information.
He noted that effective AI-powered forecasting depends on quality observations and called for increased investment in observation systems to address data gaps across Africa.
Prof. Anosike also highlighted steps already taken by NiMet to integrate AI into its operations, including the establishment of an AI Research Team in January 2026 and the development of frameworks, procedures and use cases to guide the deployment of AI and machine learning technologies.
The agency is currently evaluating advanced AI weather prediction models and developing the MeteoAI platform to enhance forecasting, climate prediction, forecast verification and early warning services.
