Operatives of the Delta State Police Command said they have recorded operational successes in their efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms, combat violent crimes across the State, as operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) and Command Anti-Cult Unit (CACU), in separate intelligence-led operations, arrested two suspects.
Operatives disclosed they recovered 2 pump-action guns, 18 live cartridges and other dangerous items during the operations.
Edafe Bright, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Delta State Command, who confirmed the arrest said that on September 12, 2026, operatives of the VCRU, acting on credible intelligence, stormed a residence in Obiaruku. This according to him, was sequel to information that the occupant was in possession of a firearm and ammunition.
Edafe, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Joel Iwomi of Umuebu, Obiaruku, resisted the operatives’ attempt to gain access to the premises.
He added that operatives, however, successfully gained entry and conducted a search and recovered 1 pump-action gun and 18 live cartridges.
The suspect, according to him, was arrested and taken into custody, stating that investigation was ongoing.
The PPRO said that in another intelligence-led operation on September 9, 2026, operatives of the Command Anti-Cult Unit (CACU) arrested Chukwuka Nzete (aka “Ododo”) (m) of Isupe Community, Ndokwa West LGA, who was suspected of involvement in the illegal sale and proliferation of firearms and allegedly operated a shrine where suspected criminal elements were fortified.
“A search of the suspect’s residence led to the recovery of one pump-action gun, four dagger knives, one battle axe and pots containing substances suspected to be charms. The suspect was taken into custody, while investigation is ongoing to unravel the full extent of his activities and possible links with other criminal elements.”
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel E. Erale has reaffirmed the command’s resolve to deny criminal elements access to illicit firearms and other weapons capable of threatening public safety.
The CP further called on residents to remain vigilant and promptly provide credible information on suspicious persons, illegal firearms and criminal activities within their communities, assuring that all actionable information will be treated with the necessary confidentiality.
