SSANU, Federal University, Lafia chapter, joins nationwide strike

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Federal University, Lafia chapter, has joined the five days nationwide warning strike called by the national body.

The action, according to Mr Monday Sarki, the chapter’s chairman, followed the expiration of an ultimatum to the Federal Government to address SSANU’s concerns.

“The strike started today (Monday), and will end on Friday, Aug. 23, 2019,” he said.

He listed the union’s demands to include the non-payment of earned allowances, dismissal of staff of the university’s staff schools, failure to implement agreements reached with the association, among others.

“In view of the various issues in contention, our national body decided that all branches should commence a five-day strike to drive home our demands,” he said.

“The Federal Government gave priority to only  academic staff with more than 80 per cent of the money released for earned allowances given to them, while other categories of staff were treated like second class citizens.”

Our correspondent, who visited the school, saw officials of the union directing members to return home in compliance with the strike. (NAN)
