The Standard Tennis Development Club Owerri (STDC) will slug it out with the Enugu Sports Club in the first semi-finals of East of the Niger Inter Club Tennis Championship (ENIC) holding at the Nnewi Sports Club from January 31 to February 1, 2019.
STDC defeated Onitsha Sports Club by four matches to one in the quarter finals.
The Enugu Sports Club had qualified on technical victory in the quarter finals having benefited from the disqualification of their rivals Calabar Sports Club in the quarter finals for fielding an unlicenced player against ENIC regulations.
Meanwhile another semi-finalist and defending Champion, Orlu Recreation Club is billed to take on Aba Sports Club in the second semi-finals bout.
Nnewi won the right to host the tennis extravaganza among other biding clubs in the region as a mark of respect for the former MD of Cutix Plc Nnewi Chief Ifeanyi Uzodike who retired from the service of the company and which in turn has sponsored the competition for the last twenty years.
In another development, the President of Nigeria Tennis Federation Engr. I. Akindayo has promised to grace the finals of this year’s ENIC after missing that of last year in Calabar.
He told ENIC media in Owerri that the Championship has remained one of the best organized championships in the country.
ENIC tennis league remains the oldest, longest running and most successful tennis clubs league in the country.
