Sequel to the three days warning strike embarked upon by dockworkers branch of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) at AP.Moller Terminals Apapa in Lagos over anti labour activities, dockworkers sacked in Liberia, West coast of Africa have been recalled by the same terminal operators.
The multinational it was gathered had sacked some aggrieved dockworkers in Liberia seaport of Monrovia over poor renumeration packages which in turn led to their dismissal in the first quarter of 2022.
But in solidarity support for the George Weah countrymen, the dockers who had protested the alleged harsh treatment by APMT Liberia on workers which in turn led to their sack, the timely intervention of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) , the Liberia Maritime Union and MWUN, the workers were reinstated.
Apparently determined to fight for workers welfare irrespective of the country , the union and its affiliates engaged APMT in Liberia through systematic and scientific approachwhich eventually led to their reinstatement.
Confirming the development to our correspondent over the weekend, President General, MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju said that the strike embarked upon by Nigerian dockworkers gave birth to reinstatement of the workers in Liberia.
Adeyanju said that the dialogue was at play between the parties involved and at the end the workers reinstatement.
He maintained that some of the multinationals have no regard for African labour workers at the seaport, saying that the right of workers must be be toiled with in any way.
The President General noted that ” I think APMT don’t have regards for workers all over Africa..
“Liberia, Nigeria APMT workers are members of ITF but the fallout of that three days strike in Nigeria gave birth to the workers in Liberia being recalled by management of APMT in that country.”
He commended ITF and the labour unions for the firm solidarity support for the workers reinstatement pointing out that there is strength in union even at continental level.
He said the solidarity support for Liberia dockers is a signal to others across the continent to understand that labour unions at the port are essential workers that must be treated fairly adding that their right must be prioritized for economic gains and benefits.
Adeyanju lamented that the multinationals are generating huge revenue from the continent yet they failed to pay what is right and fair for the workers and such practices will not be accepted anymore.
