The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Oyo/Osun Area Command, said it has commenced investigation into a fatal incident that occurred along the Osogbo axis.
The incident, it was gathered happened on March 15, 2026, and led to loss of one life.
The incident, which has attracted public attention following the circulation of a video on social media and a statement issued by the Osun State Police Command, prompted the Customs authority to begin an internal review to determine the circumstances surrounding the event.
According to a press statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Customs 1, Abdulmalik Akintola, officers attached to the Oyo/Osun Area Command patrol team were on routine enforcement duty in the area when the incident occurred.
Preliminary findings according to him, indicate that the officers were attempting to intercept suspected smuggled foreign used vehicles, popularly known as “Tokunbo,” in line with the Service’s mandate to curb smuggling and enforce trade regulations.
The Command expressed deep regret over the loss of life recorded during the operation and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.
It emphasised that the Service places high value on the sanctity of human life and remains committed to ensuring that enforcement activities are conducted with professionalism and responsibility.
As part of the investigation, the Command disclosed that it was reviewing the operational mandates and conduct of the officers involved in the operation, identified as Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel.
The review will assess whether their actions complied with the Service’s Rules of Engagement and other operational guidelines.
The Customs Service also called for a coordinated and objective investigation involving relevant authorities, including the Nigeria Police Force, particularly to establish critical details such as the origin of the ammunition discharged during the incident.
The Command urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while due process takes its course, noting that the outcome of the investigation will determine further actions in accordance with Nigerian law.
