Court says Duke is ‘authentic’ SDP presidential candidate

Mr Duke

A former governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke on Thursday has been affirmed the “authentic” presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Nigeria’s February 16, polls.

A court in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital presided by Hussein Baba-Yusuf, on December 14, declared a former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana as the party’s candidate.

Gana took advantage of a clause in the SDP constitution that the party’s candidate and its national chairman should not come from the same zone.

The judge pointed out that the party’s zoning formula does not allow a presidential candidate to emerge from the same zone, as the chairman of the party.

Duke is from Cross River State and its National Chairman, Chief Olu Falae is from Ondo State, all from Southern Nigeria. Gana had since being parading himself at the presidential candidate had launched his blueprint for his campaign.

At the SDP presidential primary held in October, 2018, the former Governor scored 812 against Gana’s 611.
