Bauchi Assembly suspends plenary to commiserate with victims of boat mishap

Bauchi lawmakers suspends plenary over the boat tragedy that claimed many lives in Kirfi Local Government Area of the state.

The Speaker of the state house of assembly, Hon. Abubakar Y. Suleiman, led a delegation of the legislators to Kirfi to commiserate with the people over the sad incidence that occurred in the area.

Speaking at Kirfi Local Government Secretariat and Palace of the District Head of Kirfi, Speaker Suleiman said they were shocked at receiving the tragic news of the mishap that killed many people which he described as national tragedy. He said immediately after receiving the news the house suspended its sitting to honour the deceased and pay sympathy visit to the area.

The speaker after condoling the people of Kirfi, assured the Chairman, Caretaker Committee and District Head that the house will do everything humanly possible to give legislative intervention to people who have to cross many rivers for their daily activities to get government’s intervention at both state and national levels.

The house, through the speaker donated money to victims and families of the deceased and assured that Bauchi Assembly will contact all relief agencies to bring materials to the victims.

Responding, the Chairman Caretaker Committee of Kirfi LG Alhaji Abdu Bappa Bara thanked the Speaker for the visit explaining that about 38 people were on board when the boat capsized and only 12 people were rescued while others drown.

He confirmed that seventeen people lost their lives while Sarkin Ruwa and other specialists in water engage in search for other people who drowned in the river.

The chairman urged the lawmakers and Bauchi State Government to provide access roads to the communities as many people are dying annually while crossing such rivers in the LGA.

Also speaking, member representing Kirfi Constituency Hon Abdulkadir Umar Dewu commended the human feeling and kind gesture of the speaker and his colleagues to the people of Kirfi Local Government.
