President General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, has reiterated that workers in the sector deserve the best of welfare package considering their immense contributions to the nation’s economic development.
Speaking when he received the leadership of the Maritime Correspondents’ Organisation of Nigeria (MARCON) led by its President, Ismail Aniemu, at the Union’s Secretariat in Lagos, the President General averred that his leadership would remain committed to a worker- driven agenda in all its activities.
He added that his joy as a union leader was derived from the number of improved welfare conditions, deserving remuneration and higher quality of life the workers get which translated to better living for members of their various families.
MWUN and MARCON reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their existing cordial relationship and deepening collaboration in advancing the interests of the maritime sector.
Aniemu said the relationship between MARCON and MWUN remains important to the maritime industry, stressing that a strong and united maritime workforce is essential to the growth and development of the sector.
He commended the union leadership for the strides recorded under Comrade Bunu’s administration, particularly the progress made through Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs), describing the achievements as significant to workers and their families.
According to him, the union leadership is doing well and continues to soar in its efforts to advance the interests of maritime workers.
Aniemu assured the MWUN leadership of MARCON’s continued support, particularly through professional and factual reportage that amplifies the union’s achievements and brings issues affecting maritime workers to public attention.
He also intimated the MWUN President-General on MARCON’s forthcoming conference on sustainable fishing in Nigeria, scheduled for September 30, 2026, at Rockview Hotel, Apapa, Lagos.
Responding, Bunu commended MARCON for its professionalism and courage in reporting issues without fear or favour, particularly its commitment to “telling truth to power” and presenting issues as they are.
He said MWUN would continue to work for the benefit of its members, adding that improved welfare remains central to the union’s responsibilities.
Bunu stressed that the primary responsibility of a workers’ union is to speak for and protect the interests of its members.
He also charged journalists to remain factual and fearless in the discharge of their duties, saying, “Always report the facts. Don’t fear anyone. That’s how you build a nation.”
The MWUN President-General assured MARCON of the union’s continued collaboration, stressing that the doors of MWUN would always remain open to the organisation.
